My husband, Michael Williams, and I (Lindsay Williams) set out on this adventure in October 2007, by starting Midnight Sun Cafe. I worked in the restaurant industry for several years before I realized my dream of one day owning my own cafe. I wanted to create a space that was warm and inviting. Where people could come to relax, and their minds could find sanctuary from the stresses of everyday life. I started by serving the best coffee I could get my hands on. K Bay Coffee and Espresso is Organic and Fairly Traded, locally roasted in Homer, Alaska. Over the years we have had excellent staff, our menu has grown, and we found our niche on the east end of downtown. We are passionate about great food and warm hospitality.
We are heavily involved in our community and have volunteered our time for local events like Trick or Treat Street, Habitat for Humanity, Four A's, Heart of Anchorage Awards, Young Women of Achievement, and Breast Cancer Focus Inc. Over the past 10 years, we have made numerous in-kind donations to local non-profits and schools for silent auctions supporting fundraising efforts. Midnight Sun Cafe has a partnership with AVAIL High School. We provide them with job shadowing opportunities, present during career day, and provide in-kind incentives for academic performance and attendance. We love the students and staff of AVAIL and think of them as part of the Midnight Sun Cafe family. For four years, I served on the advisory board for the Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Class at King Career Center. This program helps to prepare students for entry-level positions in small business while helping them to identify educational pathways to a more specialized business field.
We are also passionate about recycling. Each week we take a truck full of recycling across town. As a restaurant, we create a lot of trash and feel it is our responsibility to do what we can to reduce our footprint.
Part of my dream has always been to sew into the community and to make a difference. The cafe has been instrumental in realizing this dream and I look forward to many more years of positively impacting our community.
*We hope you find joy each day in this life you have been given.
